How to count Directs and Verticals in Morrell's Quadrate
In Thomas Morrell's system, there are 12 direct positions and 7 vertical positions, the verticals being of secondary influence to the directs. The directs are then counted out from right to left from the Birthcard, wherever it may be on the Quadrate for that particular year. (The Ruling Card can also be used here when analyzing the chart from this perspective as well).
If the birthcard is positioned at the bottom left of the Quadrate plate for example, as shown in the bottom left illustration, then you begin the count at the very top right hand square and continue on as the sequence shows in RED numbers until you've reached the 12th position. The vertical position counts straight up from the birthcard, and in this example, ends at the bottom right hand corner of the Quadrate in order to end the sequence as shown in the first illustration of GREEN numbers.
In the second illustration on the bottom right Quadrate plate, the birthcard is located in the middle area of the Quadrate as it shows the sequence of how to count the directs (in RED) and the verticals (in GREEN) in this fashion.
Note carefully that the verticals only count out to 7 positions as they are grouped only with the first 7 positions of the directs from Mercury to Neptune. The 5 outer positions ( Pluto, Trans-Pluto, Magi Crown, Moon and Phoenix ) are represented only in the direct line up, thus equaling 12 directs and only 7 verticals. These 5 outer cards represent an overall influence that affects the entire year.
You can see this better in a linear version. Each number represents the planetary period as shown. This also applies to the Quadrate plates below so that when you see the number 1, it is in effect saying that you're in the Mercury period, #2, in the Venus period, etc., from the birthcard position.

SIDE NOTE: Morrell's system differs from Camp's system here when applying the verticals. Camp counts his verticals all in one column, while Morrell switches one column to the left and continues on with the count, allowing all 7 positions to be accounted for all the time. When using Camp's system however, on the years when your birthcard falls in either the outer left two columns or the outer right two columns, it will leave you with only 6 verticals and no vertical Neptune card since you cannot overlap the birthcard.
An example of this would be the first illustration below on the left. If we were counting the same verticals up from the birthcard using Camp's method, we would be short one card, the Neptune card in the 7th position, because the count has to stop short of the birthcard when using the same column. However with Morrell's method, the 7th position of Neptune continues to the bottom right square of the Quadrate and completes the sequence.
So using Morrell's reasoning, he contends that if you drop down one line in counting direct positions, why not do the same thing with verticals? If you turn the Quadrate 90 degrees to the left, you in effect have a horizontal count using the verticals the same way as you would count the directs.
